For decades, farmers working with healthy soil have known something is different about their food — more flavor, better animal health, crops that seem more resilient. But translating that intuition into something measurable, communicable, and commercially valuable has remained out of reach.
This panel brings together leading researchers and experienced farmers to close that gap. Drawing on emerging science around soil biology and nutrient density measurement, the conversation will focus on what farmers can actually observe, track, and share — and what that means for the future of quality-focused agriculture. Whether you are just beginning to think about nutrient density or already measuring it, this session is designed to give you practical insight and language to take back to your farm and your buyers.

Improving support for farmers to navigate Organic Certification

What resources report on organic pricing and what are the gaps in this data?
Public price and sales reports have helped level the playing field between buyers and sellers of all sizes. As agricultural information becomes increasingly privatized and markets more concentrated, that public data is more important than ever for a fair, stable organic sector. Join researcher Katie Butterfield (UC Davis), as she shares findings from her new peer-reviewed article, Improving USDA’s Public Price and Volume Data for an Equitable Organic Food Value Chain, along with the broader work behind it.
Here’s what to expect:
– Where to access organic pricing data as a farmer.
– What the research found: interviews and surveys with organic producers, processors, distributors, and retailers about how price and volume data can better serve them.
– Why access matters: many farmers don’t have the resources to purchase private data sources, and improving public data access, especially smaller markets, is one of the clearest ways to close that gap.
This session is for transitioning and organic farmers, buyers, supply chain actors, researchers, and advocates who want to understand what’s happening to organic acreage and pricing transparency and how better data can support a more equitable organic value chain.

Forkbound Farm Field Day

Rodale Institute’s Markets team is convening a Rye Working Group focused on developing diverse markets for organic rye.
Several significant rye initiatives already exist. Rather than duplicate them, our intention is to uplift the work already underway, increase shared learning, identify new opportunities, and explore strategies that require more coordination than any one organization can achieve alone. Rodale is convening and facilitating this group to support moving this work forward together.
While this working group focuses on rye, we recognize it is part of addressing a larger systemic need to build markets for the winter grains that make up healthy organic cropping rotations.
This working group intends to bring together growers, processors, millers, distillers, brand buyers, breeders, and researchers from across the rye supply system to coordinate efforts, share market intelligence, and find concrete ways to grow demand for organic rye.
We will be hosting two introductory meetings (September 14 and September 28) where we will share:
– Introductions and a chance to hear what everyone’s already working on
– The working group’s purpose and scope
– Systemic challenges and opportunities for rye markets
In Session 3 (October 5), we will get to work on collective action.
Conveners:
Will Glazik, Rodale Institute
Bridget Gilmore, Rodale Institute

This hands-on workshop will provide Garden Program participants with the opportunity to learn about harvesting honey while gaining a deeper understanding of seasonal hive management and beekeeping practices. Participants will explore the steps involved in preparing hives for a successful honey harvest, including spring hive assessments, common treatments, the use of queen excluders and honey supers, preparing supers for harvest, and the process of extracting honey using a manual honey extractor.
In addition to learning practical beekeeping skills, participants will explore the essential role that pollinators play in supporting healthy ecosystems and productive food gardens. The workshop will encourage participants to view bees with curiosity rather than fear, while highlighting simple ways to support pollinators, such as planting beneficial flowering species that also contribute to higher garden yields. By combining hands-on experience with education, the workshop will help participants build the confidence to care for bees on their own—whether by maintaining a backyard hive, expanding into a small apiary, or simply becoming stronger advocates for pollinator conservation within their communities.

You’ve transitioned to organic—or you’re considering it. What comes next?
Presented by Rodale Institute and the Organic Trade Association as part of the National Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP), this webinar is designed for farmers thinking beyond certification. Transitioning to organic is one step; building a viable business around it is another.
Danielle and Steven of TendWell Farm will share how they approached that challenge. Danielle will walk through how they developed a brand, identified market opportunities, and explored value-added products and alternative revenue streams for their diversified vegetable system. She’ll also discuss a key but often under-addressed reality: while organic can command a price premium, capturing that value depends on clear positioning and a thoughtful market strategy.
This session is a practical conversation with farmers who have navigated these decisions. Come prepared to listen, ask questions, and consider how their experience might apply to your own operation.
This event is supported through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP). TOPP is a program of the USDA Organic Transition Initiative and is administered by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) National Organic Program (NOP).

Organic value does not stop at the farm gate. It is created and captured through the markets we build the relationships we nurture and the stories we tell from soil to shelf.
This virtual webinar explores how farmers, food makers, and organic entrepreneurs can move beyond selling raw commodities to intentionally design value added products and market pathways that reward organic practices.
Through real world case studies and practical examples, we will examine how successful organic businesses have transformed crops into brands’ brands into categories and products into resilient value chains.
Participants will learn how today’s conscious consumers make buying decisions where value is gained or lost along the organic supply chain and how small shifts in product format function audience or narrative can unlock new markets. Whether you are selling at farmers markets working with regional distributors pitching retailers or building a direct-to-consumer presence this session will help you see your organic product not just as food but as part of a larger market system you can shape.

One of the hardest parts about selling organic grain is getting bids from multiple buyers in your area. But it’s worth the effort! Since there is likely to be a price spread between buyers. And sometimes it’s as much as 10% or more. This webinar will explore basic steps in finding and reaching out to organic grain buyers in your area. It will also discuss what to do once you get a merchandiser/buyer on the phone, in terms of discovering what crops they buy, what volumes, when they make new contracts, and, most importantly, price discovery. We will also roleplay a phone call between an organic grain farmer and an organic grain buyer.

Organic Grain Selling: Roleplaying to Help You Connect and Do Business with New Buyers

Grain is often not consumed in the same area where it is produced, and individual farmers are rarely able to fill five rail cars at a time. Aggregation and logistics play a huge role in the value chain of organic grains. Join us for this webinar to hear from Matt Nidlinger of Wenger Group and Brian Williams of LaBudde on how organic grains are moving around the country and what farmers can do to add value to their operations.

Our monthly Leasing Organic Farmland Meet & Greet brings together producers, aspiring producers, landowners, technical assistance providers, and interested community members to share resources about organic transition and TOPP programs, and to collaborate to achieve our goal of creating a certified organic farm incubator in the Treasure Valley that can offer long-term leases for producers as well as shared infrastructure, equipment, and markets. The incubator will also offer beginning farmers training and mentorship from experienced organic farmers so they can build successful businesses.

May Leasing Organic Farmland Meet & Greet

Follow up from the Grower’s Own Organic Farming Conference, setting up a tour at the farms of our keynote speakers. Description of the event:
Purple Sage Farms have been doing sustainable and Organic farming for over 35 years. They have a whole mix of production: vegetable growing, diverse and specialty herbs, no-till methods, regenerative sheep ranching, and equipment like greenhouses, a commercial kitchen, and homemade smoker and dehydrator.
Come tour the farm and not only hear them talk about, but also SEE, how they make such a diverse and successful operation run.

Purple Sage Field Day

Finally, we will hold our annual distribution of regional and cultural plants. This is one of our largest events, and one that is at the heart of a lot of what we do in the Garden Program. Providing our program participants with important cultural plants, adapted to our climate, that are difficult to find fresh in store is super important to us. We are also providing these plants free of charge to our program participants to help mitigate the cost of living, as well as preparing culturally important foods. We are expecting to distribute 5,000+ plants to our garden program families. These 5,000+ plants include plants grown by our program, plants donated from Food for Lane County, Bethel Farm, and Beeloved Farm. Information on seed saving, overwintering pepper plants, TOPP resources, and other community resources will be available at this event.

Annual Distribution of Regional and Cultural Plants

This final hands-on workshop will be focused on labeling and setting up for our annual plant distribution. This means labeling each pot, organizing by cultivar and preparing volunteers for the plant distribution (teaching them about the plants they will be distributing to families to ensure that specialty varieties get seed returned to the program at the end of the season).

Greenhouse Work Party 10: Transplanting and Final Prep for Plant Distribution

This hands-on workshop will be focused on transplanting plants previously seeded and preparing them for the plant distribution. This means labeling each pot, organizing by cultivar to make set-up for the plant distribution easier.

Greenhouse Work Party 9: Transplanting and Preparing for Plant Distribution

This hands-on workshop will be focused on transplanting plants that were previously seeded. The particular focus will be on establishing a hardening off station by our greenhouse to begin hardening off plants in preparation for the plant distribution.

Greenhouse Work Party 8: Transplanting and Hardening Off Plant Starts

Together, we’ll explore practical approaches to managing overwintered cover crops as the growing season begins.

Cover Crop Variety Trial Field Day

This is our final larger scale workshop in our greenhouse workshop series where we will discuss pollinator isolation as it relates to seed saving true seed. We will be demonstrating this with our overwintered pepper plants (popular culturally important Chile varieties like Habanero, Poblano, Chile de Agua, Thai peppers, etc. that have been overwintered for the past 2 years). Last year our pepper plants, grown specifically for our seed bank, cross pollinated and many hybrid peppers were created. Which is why we want to hold this workshop. We want to show gardeners how they can save the true seed of their specialty peppers and corn despite being in a community garden setting.

We will be hosting our 4th greenhouse workshop led by Javier Lara (founder of Anahuac), on Quelites y la Milpa Tradicional. This workshop’s focus is on identifying and discussing the cultural importance of Quelites and la Milpa tradicional and discussing how our relationship has changed/adapted with these things living in Oregon. We will talk about adaptations to the climate in the PNW, and how to source quelites and traditional corn varieties here in Oregon.
The hands-on work party portion of the day is focused on seeding more culturally important crop varieties related to the workshop discussion, and transplanting plants from earlier seeding days to their own individual pots in preparation for the plant distribution. Seeding culturally important herbs like Epazote, Verdolagas, and a variety of specialty corn are the priority this seeding day.

Greenhouse Workshop 4/Work Party 7: Quelites y la Milpa Tradicional

So much has grown in our greenhouse, so this all day workshop will be open to the community and garden members to stop by as they’re available to assist us in transplanting several culturally important plant varieties and regionally specific plant varieties grown in the greenhouse. Some of these plants ready to transplant are also donated plants from the Food for Lane County Youth Farm as well as the Bethel Farm.

Greenhouse Work Party 6: Transplanting

Come walk through the winter grain plots! Check out the growth habits of different varieties of wheat, triticale, rye, and barley to see differences in vigor, plant height, heading date, and weed competition.
