Knowing proper handling and first-aid techniques can save lots of money and grief when raising livestock on your farm. Jacki Martinez Perkins, along-time homesteader and MOFGA&#8217;s Dairy and Livestock Specialist, will demonstrate livestock handling with an interactive Q&amp;A at Misty Brook Farm. In addition to covering livestock handling and health we will discuss programs to support livestock farmers and implement more organic practices including the Transition to Organic Partnership Program.

Flax Field Walk

The Farmers Organic Roundtable provides an opportunity for organic farmers, those transitioning to organic and those investigating organic production to gather and connect. The goal of this roundtable is to build an organic support network for farmers to discuss issues, solutions, successes, and ideas. 
This roundtable is hosted by the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Hampshire (NOFA-NH), Sponsored by the Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP) and facilitated by NOFA-NH&#8217;s TOPP Coordinator.
This recurring meeting will allow farmers to network and build relationships that will support organic production in New Hampshire. Together, we can bring issues to light, help to foster solutions for farmers through the collaboration of state partner organizations, meet with technical advisors and co-create topic-specific meetings, as well as on-farm workshops and collaborations that will build a supportive network of farmers in the Granite State.

Farmers Organic Roundtable

Join us to celebrate New York’s regional farming communities. All events include farm tours, meetups, community education, organic advocacy and information, live music, food trucks, local vendors, activities for the kids, and more!
Farrm Wines was one of the first certified organic farms on Long Island and is home to the only organically grown grapes there. Join us at noon for a farmer-to-farmer tour led by Rex Farr to discuss the roots of organic on the island, how organic has developed over the years, and his biodynamic and organic practices. In addition to the farmer tour, Rex will host family-friendly tractor tours through the eight-acre vineyard throughout the day.

Farm Fest ’24 Long Island

Maryrose and Donn operate a certified organic sheep operation were they use rotational grazing practices. They also graze a few cows and horses, sometime with their sheep flock. They are also a mixed power farm utilizing draft horse power and tractors. This workshop will talk about rotational grazing, fencing options, sheep breeding and the decision to change production from cheese making to meat production. NRCS will be joining us to talk about funding opportunities available for grazing infrastructure. In addition, we will have discussions on shared farmland and growing culinary and medicinal herbs.

This is a networking and connection-building event for BIPOC farmers, where we’ll share space and a meal.

Growing Organically Together: A Networking Event for BIPOC Farmers

Julie Rawson and Jack Kittredge of Many Hands Organic Farm “aim for the highest possible fertility, a no till scenario, increased soil organic matter, and high nutrient density, disease and insect resistance, and as few weeds as possible.”
Sound too good to be true? Join us at a hands-on workshop on their farm to discuss their experience 10 years into no-till management, a bit about their problems with this modality as they have evolved over the years, and the solutions that they have implemented. 
Julie and Jack will lead participants through a hands-on exploration of their on farm practices: 
We will show how we use cover crops pre, post and during the season, tarps throughout the farming year, and myriad sources of mulch. 
We will demonstrate the use of our bale chopper, mulch some broccoli with chopped straw or hay and leaves, take down some cover crops and use a pre-plant soil drench for planting of tomatoes in the next 2-3 days. 
We will remove tarps from some of our sweet potato beds and prepare the beds for planting similar to the tomato beds. 
Finally, we will undersow inoculated (with biocoat gold) crimson clover in our mulched collard beds and apply a transplant drench to the beds.
This event is a good fit for farmers exploring ways of building soil health on organic farms.

Keeping the Soil Covered: Tarps, Cover Crops, Mulch

NOFA/Mass is excited to feature Antonio Acosta from Agriculture &amp; Land-Based Training Association (ALBA) and Coronel Produce organic farm to share their tips and techniques behind keeping your books straight for organic certification and inspection. Plus, they’ll talk about how recordkeeping for organic certification has other, unrelated benefits as well!
We understand there are many barriers and complications behind certification – including paperwork. Come with your questions and curiosities for this special webinar.

Demystifying Organic Certification: Record Keeping

Meet Linda Hoffman, orchardist at Old Frog Pond Farm, and Laura Davis, Organic Certification Assistance Coordinator and Soil Health Advisor with NOFA/Mass, for a hands-on exploration of organic management practices for orchards and small-scale fruit production. 
Join us to discuss the orchard’s perennial intercropping system and its impact on soil health and pest management. We’ll learn about Old Frog Pond’s foliar spraying methods and approach to tree nutrition. Tour the orchard and berry patch, and see Old Frog Pond’s pruning system for managing fire blight and other pathogens. We’ll also have a hands-on demonstration of whip-and-tongue grafting, and examples of topworked trees. 
This is a unique opportunity to explore one of the few Certified Organic orchards in the state of Massachusetts and get a first-hand look at the how-tos of organic orchard management.

Organic Flint Corn Growing: Considerations and Equipment for Organic Farmers

Rise &amp; Root Farm is a Queer/Trans, BIPOC centered farm uprooting underlying systems of oppression in order to create liberation. They will provide a tour of their farm in the black dirt region of Orange County, NY and share their process of transitioning from practicing to certified organic. Rise &amp; Root is participating in the TOPP Mentorship program. 
This event is part of the Mid Hudson region&#8217;s chapter of Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training (CRAFT). We will collaborate with the NYC CRAFT chapter to invite urban and aspiring farmers from NYC.

NYC CRAFT Collaboration-Transitioning to Organic Certification

This tour will explore all aspects of cover cropping on a diversified, transitioning-to-organic farm. Leon Vehaba, farm director of Titusville Farm, will discuss benefits of cover cropping in organic production systems (including erosion control, weed suppression, nitrogen fixation and soil health), different types of cover crops (warm and cool season, winter kill and overwintering), cover crop selection around cash crops, and cover crop termination.

Aaron from Four Root Farm will go over some of the techniques they’ve implemented over the years to help with Energy Efficiency on the farm and the benefits they’ve seen as a result.

Climate change in Connecticut continues to impact farms every year and incorporating different water management techniques can mean the difference between a successful season and not. Libby from Russo’s Roots will go over the different water management techniques used on their farm, water sources, using timers for watering, and the different nozzles they use when doing overhead watering. We’ll also touch on what hasn’t worked in the past and changes they’d like to make in the future.

This 3-hour hands-on workshop will guide participants through the entire process of sprayer calibration. Attendees will learn the importance of sprayer calibration and how calibration affects application rate, then practice calibrations on demonstration backpack sprayers using the methods and protocols we covered. After assessing the success of the calibrations and addressing any questions, the group will collaborate on the calibration of a 30-foot single-arm boom sprayer.

Boom Sprayer and Backpack Sprayer Calibration Workshop (English and Spanish)

Come learn about lambing season and get hands-on experience with the newborn lambs at Willow Pond Sheep Farm in Gardiner, NY. Farmers Carrie &amp; Brent Wasser will provide an overview of how they manage spring lambing on their farm; topics will include the role of the farmer during the birthing process, post-lambing care and housing; nutrition requirements for ewes and lambs; and the weaning process. They will also discuss sourcing organic grain for their pasture-based flocks during the lambing process.

What is CRAFT? 
CRAFT stands for Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training and is a model for on-farm peer-to-peer training and network-building for farmers. The original CRAFT network formed in upstate New York and has been replicated many times since, adapted to meet the needs of each particular place.
Alabama CRAFT includes farm owners/operators as well as farm interns, apprentices, and employees, and aspiring farmers. It builds on past efforts to build community and share knowledge – including but not limited to the Regional Alabama Farmer Socials, and ASAN’s kindling workdays and crop mobs and Skillshare Trainings. High Tunnel Repair Day and Info Session + Potluck

Have you recently decided to transition your farm to organic certification, or are you considering making the switch? Or maybe you’re already certified organic, and just want a refresher? 
This webinar will discuss a soil-health based approach to using soil amendments on organic farms. 
We’ll review the OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) list and go over common misconceptions about restricted and listed materials. We’ll also discuss how to use various soil health assessments to determine what amendments your farm needs, and how to identify appropriate organic options:
Standard soil test and Saturated Paste Test – chemical mineral content 
Biological Assessment – microbial life 
Soil Health Assessment – physical aspects 
You’ll leave equipped with the knowledge about which soil tests to do and when, and what the tests will tell you about your soil health and amendment applications. Join us to gain the confidence to craft the right amendments plan for your farm this year.

Navigating SNAP, Double Up Food Bucks NY, Glynwood’s Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), and NOFA-NY’s Farm Share Programs

Join us for a TOPP (Transition to Organic Partnership Program) event focused on organic agroforestry and perennial systems. This event will explore the challenges of transitioning to organic orchard production as well as opportunities for alternative orchard production. The walking tour and discussion will be led by Rodale Institute’s Perennial Systems Scientist, Dr. Leigh Archer.

Transition to Organic Orchard Production

There are points of both overlap and tension for farms trying to meet organic and food safety standards. In this workshop, we’ll cover the principles and requirements of both and the ways that growers can meet them effectively and streamline their efforts as much as possible. Topics will include selecting and handling soil amendments, agricultural water management, and recordkeeping.

Presenter: Lisa grew up in Worcester, Ma and studied biology at the University of California – Santa Cruz. After college, she worked for several years as a Research Technician doing basic medical research in the field of Immunology. More interested in the bigger picture, and in being outdoors, she began working on small farms in Iowa and in Massachusetts. Since 2013, Lisa has been an Educator with the UMass Extension Vegetable Program. She works with commercial vegetable growers throughout Massachusetts on topics such as Integrated Pest Management and Produce Safety. She is a co-editor and contributor to UMass Extension’s Vegetable Notes newsletter and the New England Vegetable Management Guide. She holds a Master’s Degree in Food and Agriculture Law and Policy from the Vermont Law and Graduate School.

Transition to Organic Production Seminar

Join Katelyn Porter, the Value Chain Coordinator at the NH Food Alliance and coordinator of the NH Food Hub Network, to learn about food hubs in New Hampshire and the services they provide the farms they work with. Katelyn will cover a bit about the process of selling through, and building a successful relationship with, a food hub and the customers they market to. Hear from peer farmers who currently sell products through a food hub to learn about their experiences and advice. Lastly, she’ll help answer questions about the Strengthening Organic Enforcement Act (SOE)— what it means for producers and the implications it may have selling through a food hub in New Hampshire. This event is in partnership with NOFA-NH and the Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP).
